It has a small footprint but we were mostly looking for a place to sleep because we wanted to spend our time at the beach! Speaking of the beach, it is a short walk <5 minutes to having your toes in the water! Path is right across the street and the inn has wagons, beach chairs and towels to take to the beach. My husband and I booked a last minute short stay in the Heron Hideaway and were very satisfied with our stay.
West End and Periwinkle are up on the west end of Sanibel where there are n businesses, Ding Darling is across the street and you have just some low density modest homes on the quiet lanes that take you to the beach without crossing any roads.
Sunshine Island Inn is on Sanibel's east end were you can walk to some things and it's the quiet 'town' area of the island. Since you'll have a car, take a look at West End Paradise and Periwinkle Cottages. Very handy, convenient location and one of the better buys around. You just stroll across the street to the beach access. It's small and old fashioned and has a convenient east end location. All the units seemed to open onto the central pool. It is near the street and less private than some places, but it has very easy beach access and the grounds were very nicely maintained and tidy as was the building itself. I've not stayed there but made a point of driving past when I was down last.
